Explaining Labour Shortage Complicated: CEO

Vivian Kinnaird says the pandemic isn't the only reason

A Niagara based labour specialist says to explain the on-going labour shortage is a complicated one.

Many sectors such as construction, skilled trades, education and health care still suffer.

CEO of Workforce Collective Vivian Kinnaird tells us COVID certainly had an impact, but there are other reasons.  "Could be education and skills, it could be transportation, it could be that they have no one to take care of their kids, because child care is in short supply.  Or they could be taking care of the elderly."

She adds it's not so much about people still living off government benefits.

There were shortages before the pandemic, but it only made things worse.  "People were off for a long time, and were able to either re-train, and go into other sectors.  A lot of people retired... so remember, we do have a slightly older population demographic here in Niagara."

She admits many employers, and people in general, often ask "Where did everyone go?".
