Niagara Falls Council Discusses Integrity Commissioner Complaints

Niagara Falls City Council would like to know the final cost of an integrity commissioner's report into the actions of Mayor Jim Diodati.

Diodati believes it will cost thousands of dollars.

"This was months of investigation to come out with the report that there was no contravention and that's two and there's three in the last few months that we've dealt with and they have all gone down the same path so its frustrating."

The actual report was left out of yesterday's agenda, but the St. Catharines Standard says it focuses on comments Diodati made to local media about FedDev funding for the Ryerson Innovation hub back in July 2019.

The Standard also says the commissioner could not investigate the matter because the complaint was made in February, which is more than 60 days after Diodati's comments.

Diodati says this incident was split into two complaints against him and CAO Ken Todd says there have been three complaints total recently.

Councillor Vince Kerrio believes anyone who files a frivolous complaint should pay the price.

"They can't just do it for nothing. There should be some cost whether its $100, $200 or $500. You shouldn't be able to just make a complaint against yourself or one of the councillors and once you're exonerated there is no cost to the individual."

Council passed a motion to direct staff determine how much this report will cost local taxpayers and to see if the complainants name could be made public.
