OPP Patrolling Niagara's Highways for Road Safety Week

May 14, 2019

By: Marcie Culbert

Niagara OPP will be out and about on the highways this Road Safety Week.

About 58 people have died on OPP patrolled roads so far this year, which is down significantly when compared to the 97 deaths reported at this time last year.

Most of these deaths have been connected to speeding, distracted driving, not wearing a seat belt and drug/alcohol use.

Constable Rob Knight says you should always pay attention while behind the wheel.

"You don't know who is driving in the vehicle next to you. You don't know what type of hazards are going to be on the roads or what type of animals might come out in front of you at any time; that could happen in the City or on the highway. It's best to make sure all of your faculties are focused and you don't have any impairment whatsoever."

Road Safety Week will continue through the long weekend.
