Animal rights groups urging city to re-name Marineland Parkway to Kiska Boulevard.
A letter has been sent to Niagara Falls city council, asking for Marineland Parkway to be renamed.
The letter has been included in the agenda for tomorrow's council meeting, and is signed by local activist Phil Demers, as well as officials with the Vittoria Foundation and several animal rights organizations.
The letter suggests council rename the street to Kiska Boulevard, after the park's lone killer whale, or select another name that honours the values of the community.
"Street names may be selected for many reasons, sometimes to honour local or national historical figures the drive the local economy", the letter reads. "We feel that, in this case, changing the name to 'Kiska Boulevard' reflects the city's progressive attitudes and beliefs and is more in line with how society now sees holding captive and commodifying these beautiful, intelligent, and social sea mammals for entertainment purposes."
Last year, Niagara Regional Police charged the park with using captive cetaceans for entertainment purposes without authorization.
Marineland has denied the allegations.
