A new apartment building complex will be built at the former St. Catharines hospital site on Queenston Street, starting next year.
Council approved it this week, allowing nine buildings to go up, with 2,442 units, and commercial space at the bottom.
Stephen Litt is with Vive Development, and says 10% of the units to be deemed affordable. "And again, it wouldn't be one entire building, but spread throughout the whole project, at 30% of median household income for St. Catharines. For real numbers, that's roughly $250 less than the market."
Construction is expected to take roughly 10 years.
Considering the buildings will be 24 storeys, he addressed concerns of high buildings. "The scale of the building really doesn't matter from an energy consumption perspective. What does matter, it when you have a larger building, you can amortize the cost of more efficient boiler plant, air source heat pumps, whatever it may be, over a number of suites."
Council approved it after working out details of Valleyview Road expansion.
