Fire Chief says a whole apartment building had to be evacuated
We're getting an idea of how busy St. Catharines fire department has been during this flooding.
Speaking this morning at city hall, Chief Dave Upper says they had to rescue people from a car by JC Park.
They got 150 calls for service in 12 hours during Sunday's storm. "Probably pushing 300 calls in total, through the 48 hour period, when you look at the 2 separate events. On average, when you look at our city, we're normally running about 30 to 36 calls in a 24 hour time frame, so it somewhat gives you the magnitude of what happened."
He says fire fighters also worked to keep people safe from potential electrical problems.
He adds one call came from an apartment building with flooding in the basement.
He says the whole building had to be evacuated. "It's wiped out their heating and hydro, and air conditioning. So, they have no service to their units. Even though there's no flooding in the upper floors, there's no service at all."
He adds water runs from the escarpment towards the lake, where most of the flooding happened.
