Government sources say Canada's COVID Alert app will soon be shut down.
Several media outlets reporting the move could be made as early as this week.
The app, which was launched in 2020, was billed as a way to let people know if they have been in close contact with someone who tested positive without collecting personal information.
The app required users who received a positive PCR test result to enter a one-time key on the app.
However, many provinces have replaced PCR testing with rapid testing, so fewer user keys are being given out.
As of February 1st, over 6.8 million people had downloaded the app, but only 57,704 user keys have been used.
Several experts have questioned the effectiveness of the app, saying in order to prevent spreading COVID-19, more downloads and user information would be necessary.
