Canadian Dog with H5N1 Avian Flu Passes Away

For the first time ever in Canada, a pet dog has passed away after contracting H5N1 avian flu.

OSHAWA - A pet dog in Oshawa has passed away after contracting H5N1 avian flu.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the canine became infected with the virus after chewing on a wild goose.

This is the first time this has ever happened in Canada. The federal government says the risk to Canadians remains low, adding the risk of a human contracting H5N1 avian flu from a pet is minor.

The CFIA has also reported detections of the virus in foxes, mink, raccoons, skunks, black bears, seals, dolphins, and other wild mammals.
