The City of Port Colborne says criminals are sending fraud emails for payment
A warning from the City of Port Colborne for Canal Day vendors and businesses to be wary of criminals impersonating city officials.
The city says there have been numerous reports of individuals, posing as city staff, sending unofficial, fraudulent emails, wanting payment for vendor spaces.
In many cases, these criminals contact vendors directly, also wanting personal or financial information.
The city reminds vendors all communication from email ends in @portcolborne.ca... never via gmail, yahoo, hotmail or other accounts.
The city also says while these types of scams are not unique to Canal Days, the number of cases rises as the festival approaches.
