Children in Niagara who are fighting cancer will no longer have to travel to Hamilton or beyond, for treatment.
Niagara Health, in partnership with Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario and MacMaster University, are opening a clinic at the Marotta Family hospital next year.
Lauren Ettin, the CEO of POGO, explains what the new office will have. "The satellite here at Niagara Health, will be able to supply chemotherapy, they'll be able to manage complications, they'll be able to deliver supportive care, and even better, kids won't have to go to MacMaster all the time for their clinical trials."
They expect 25-30 patients using the Niagara clinic each year.
She adds a Niagara father has been making the drive for his son for over 2-years. "He talked about the stress and pressure on his family to be traveling back and forth, the time it takes to be away from your support network, being away from work, and the kids being away from their friends and school."
She says this is the 10th Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario clinic in the province.
