Claims Need Paying Out ASAP: IBC

Insurance Bureau website

Insurance Bureau of Canada says to document everything after flooding

A reminder from the Insurance Bureau of Canada to Niagara residents who lost everything in the floods to document everything for claims.

The Bureau has put tips to Niagara residents on it's website.

Anne Marie Thomas is Director of Insurance Relations, and says documentation includes pictures and video.  "If you have had to spend any money, in order to clean up, such as renting a pump to get water out of the basement, maybe you had to buy new drywall, make sure you keep those receipts."

She adds anyone who did not buy flood insurance is unfortunately on their own.

It's going to take roughly 2 months before we have an idea of the damage claims to Niagara homes after the recent flooding.

She says it takes time for insurance workers to assess so many homes.

Paying out claims is their business, knowing people are waiting for money.  "It's in everyone's best interest that the claims are settled quickly.  The quicker a claim closes, the less it costs an insurance company."
