Jim Diodati says there are things they want to improve on
The Mayor of Niagara Falls says the downtown along Queen Street is much cleaner, and is improving.
Jim Diodati took a walk through the area with by-law and other city officials recently, finding ways to improve the area, acting like a BIA.
He says they'll be talking to building owners, who are using buildings for storage. "You must use it for retail, or we're going to have to fine you. We don't want to do that, but the area must be used for retail, that's what it's zoned for. And the area above that, must be used for rentals for apartments, to create housing."
He also says some bollards are coming down, for easier parking and snow plowing.
He adds using buildings for storage is not allowed under property standards. "Unfortunately, in some cases, we're going to have to bring forward fines, for any of these landlords who are not compliant. We want everyone to understand how important the downtown is, and as the old saying goes, 'Brush the teeth you want to keep'."
He says city staff will report to council on short and long term ways to bring more business to the area.
