Premier Doug Ford says today’s unemployment numbers are more than just statistics.
According to Statistics Canada, the national jobless rate skyrocketed to 13 percent, Ontario’s rate soared to 11.3 percent and Niagara’s rate jumped to 9.9 percent in April.
Ford says people are struggling across the province.
“Today’s job numbers weigh heavy on my heart. People have lost their jobs; they don’t know if they will make rent next month and they’re worried about making ends meet.”
He says his government is going to get Ontario working again as quickly and safely as possible, adding thousands of workers will be back to on the job next week.
Niagara’s garden centres and nurseries opened today, just in time for Mother’s Day.
Hardware and safety supply stores will open tomorrow and non-essential retail businesses with a street entrance will be able to provide curbside pickup on Monday.
