Colin Chilvers helped direct Superman, when that was filmed in Niagara Falls, winning an Oscar
A Fort Erie man, known as a Hollywood legend for directing and special effects that put Superman in the air, has died at the age of 79.
Colin Chilvers was known for his work on the original Superman movies, also the Rocky Horror picture show, and Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal.
His friend Andrew Harris, who lives in Welland, met Colin about 8-years after Superman. "Some of it was filmed over Niagara Falls, and in Niagara Falls... That's where he got his Oscar, I think it was in 1980. He was director of special effects for that, and that's how he received his Oscar."
Harris also remembers his friend directing him on work in Port Colborne.
"Following that, he apologized to me and said 'I hope you don't mind I'm directing you on what to do'. I stopped what I was doing said to him 'Colin, you're a red carpet, Hollywood director, with an Oscar, please direct me."
He adds when Colin retired from Hollywood, he became an avid woodworker.
