56 year old Frederick Penner died in 2020 after being shot by Niagara Regional Police officers
An inquest is being launched into a St. Catharines shooting that involved police.
Dr. Karen Schiff, the province's west region coroner, says she'll be looking into the death of 56 year old Frederick Penner.
On December 31st, 2019, police received a report of a man armed with a knife in the area of Rykert St. and Edith St.
An altercation took place between a suspect and police officers, and the suspect was shot.
The following day, Penner died in hospital.
According to the Special Investigations Unit, there were "no reasonable grounds" to believe the two officers involved committed a crime.
SIU Director Joseph Martino claimed the officers fired nine shots after the suspect failed to drop the knife.
Schiff says the inquest will begin on Monday, March 20th.
It will last three weeks, and about 20 witnesses are expected to testify.
