Vote on MP Tony Baldinelli's bill expected tomorrow
Federal legislation to keep killers like Paul Bernardo in maximum security prison is closer to becoming law.
Niagara Falls Conservative MP Tony Baldinelli's bill, C-232, is expected to be voted on tomorrow by MPs.
Here he is in March. "In his most recent parole hearing in 2024, Bernardo sought day parole at a halfway house, or at a minimum, escorted absences from prison so that he could attend a community program for sex offenders."
He recalls thankfully Bernardo was denied parole. "In the motion adopted by the City of St. Catharines, it states 'City council requests that the Government of Canada review, and consider legislation changes to ensure transparency in the corrections and parole system'."
He points to bad Liberal policy for Bernardo's release to a medium security prison. "Surely this Liberal government does not believe the likes of Paul Bernardo, Mark Smich, Dillen Millard or Luka Magnotta should continue to be downgraded until they are out of the corrections system... or do they?".
He recalled the devastating impact these crimes had on victims' families. "The Liberal government now talks about implementing needed justice reforms. Sadly, these reforms are required to fix problems that they themselves created when they weakened provisions of previous Conservative legislation."
Marcia Penner, a friend of Kristen French, says this bill will help restore some common sense.
