Niagara Falls' mayor is anticipating something many voters will love, a shrinking in the size of municipal government.
Jim Diodati tells us too many politicians hinder getting things done, something the province is aware of, especially in smaller areas.
"Two elected officials per ward, and there are little wards, with not a lot of people. There should be a reduction in municipal elected, and also regionally elected. There's been discussion about double direct, where municipal politicians can also serve on regional," he says.
The mayor says Niagara has 126 politicians, covering regional as well as city and town, while Hamilton has 16 and Toronto uses 26, yet their populations are much larger.
Diodati adds there's a number of ideas on how to do it. "I don't know if we're ready yet for one Niagara, for the city. I think that's maybe 50 years down the road, when they do the next discussion of governance reform. It definitely will make sense at some point, but not when there such huge geography between communities."
The mayor says reducing politicians means higher pay, but for a job that would be full-time.
