Niagara Falls MPP wants action on hospital emergency room closures.
During question period yesterday, the NDP's Wayne Gates pointed to province-wide closures in 868 emergency departments, which he says is impacting Fort Erie's Douglas Memorial hospital.
"Nearly half of the population of Fort Erie is over the age of 55. 8,000 residents do not have a family doctor, and there is no reliable public transit in town. Having an urgent care centre open 24/7 can mean the difference between life and death."
Health minister Sylvia Jones accused the NDP, and Gates himself, of voting against health care investments. "When we have capital investments of over 50 new expanded renovated hospitals, including in his own area with the South Niagara hospital, you vote against it. Now, I will say, you do show up for the photo op."
Gates demanded the government stop fighting nurses in court with Bill 124.
