Canucks and Riverhawks looking for grant increases
The City of Niagara Falls is exploring a 5-year contract extension to keep the Jr A Canucks and Jr C Riverhawks at the Gale Centre.
City staff recommended a one year extension, but no increase to grant money, that increase the two teams are also looking for.
While the city struggles with the budget, Councillor Mona Patel liked the 5-year idea. "It teaches them lots more than just sports, it teaches them life skills, such as how to get along, how to be a team player. We did ask of our CEO, to find $1-million in savings, but he says we keep spending more."
The city will search for ways to provide greater funding.
Acting Chief Administrative Officer Kira Dolce also addressed increased grant request for the teams.
"As you indicated the budget constraints we are under, and the fact that we do need to come back with a savings of $1-million. I appreciate the 5-year extension, and that is something we can come back to."
Hockey representatives pointed to impressive economic benefits for the city in keeping the teams.
The Canucks are looking for a grant increase of $60,000 to $160,000, and a 10-year lease. The Riverhawks seek a grant increase from $20,000 to $100,000, both teams pointing to increasing costs.
