A Niagara Health addictions program is receiving some praise.
Accreditation Canada and the Health Standards Organization has named the Rapid Access Addiction Medicine program as a Leading Practice.
The program provides comfort and support for those dealing with addictions to alcohol and drugs.
Niagara Health says the key to the program's success is treating both substance use and mental health problems at the same time.
"Our strength and effectiveness comes from our one-on-one visits with patients and our experience in navigating the addiction and mental health supports, services and shelters in the area," says Chris Czyzewski, Niagara Health Addiction Peer Support Worker.
Niagara Health says the program has resulted in a decrease in the number of patients returning to the Emergency Department or the mental health inpatient unit.
