NDP's Municipal Affairs Critic says Ford’s municipal meddling is all about power
Niagara Centre MPP Jeff Burch is criticizing the Ford Government after they introduced a proposal to give the mayors of Toronto and Ottawa more powers over certain bylaws in a bid to get more housing built.
The NDP's Municipal Affairs Critic says the so called "strong mayors" bill has nothing to do with housing but rather giving mayors the power to bypass councils.
He adds, the bill will make local government less transparent and less accountable while doing nothing at all to address the affordable housing crisis.
The mayors of Toronto and Ottawa are divided over the proposal.
Ottawa's Mayor says he doesn't see how the move will help build more housing, calling instead for more provincial funding.
Toronto Mayor John Tory says he needs to review the legislation but supports the idea.
