Permanent Speed Humps to go on Haist Street

Pelham council pointing to the few drivers who refuse to slow down, deputy mayor says speeding is #1 complaint

Town of Pelham is doing what it can to make sure drivers with a lead foot on Haist Street slow down.

It's moving forward with permanent speed humps, north of Brewerton.

Councillor Kevin Kerr acknowledged they'll never show everyone down, but they must think of the majority of people.  "There will always be a reckless driver, that we could put in a 16 inch speed bump, and they're still going to jump it, driving like a..... I'm not going to say it, because that's not parliamentary language."

Deputy Mayor John Wink added speeding is the number one complaint they get.

However, Councillor Wayne Olson doesn't find the evidence compelling enough.

"The people that are going the speed limit are the bulk of the people in the community.  We're making exceptions and putting in the speed bumps just for the people who don't want to obey speed limits, and probably won't be in the speed bump area anyway.  They'll pick up speed in between the speed bumps."

It was noted drivers have been seen doing over 70, and in one case, over 100kms.
