A Niagara based advocacy group is pleading with every person who can vote in the municipal election to learn about the candidates and vote.
Helen Hamilton is with Project Niagara, and stresses the importance when considering the new Niagara region, and health care in Fort Erie and Port Colborne.
She adds social media, such as facebook, is not reliable for information. "If people paid more attention to local politics, especially at this time, instead of what the Buffalo Bills are doing, or the Toronto Maple Leafs.... can you imagine the difference we'd have in local government?"
She adds people died in war for this right, and government does impact your life.
She's also greatly concerned about amalgamation, condition of roads and water services.
The 20% average voter turnout greatly disturbs her. "It's the whole municipal process, the regional councillors, to the mayors, and councillors.... they affect our day to day lives more than the provincial and federal governments."
She says you can't simply rely on an election sign a neighbour has on the lawn, learn to make your own decisions.
