The province is urging the federal government to step up protective measures at the border.
Premier Doug Ford says that while the voluntary border testing pilot program at Pearson International Airport has resulted in the testing of over 6,800 international travelers, more needs to be done.
"While we've made steady progress through this pilot program, thousands of people continue to pass through Pearson every week without being tested, creating a real risk to all Ontarians. That's why, in addition to pre-departure testing, we're asking the federal government to adopt mandatory testing upon arrival for all international travelers and impose a temporary ban on flights coming from countries where new COVID-19 strains are being detected."
Ford says that until vaccines are available to the general public, tighter controls need to be put in place at the border.
Ontario is also calling on the federal government to strengthen enforcement of quarantine measures that ensure that international travelers are following the mandatory 14-day minimum quarantine requirement.
