Councillor indicates work for Greenbelt would take part of 2024 budget
Niagara Regional council laying out its case why it needs provincial reimbursement after preparing Greenbelt land swaps.
Councillor Diana Huson revealed if there's a 9-percent property tax hike in the 2024 budget, the Build Homes Faster Act would be responsible for 2.5% of that.
She added the region plays a significant role in reaching housing targets.
"The challenge is compounded by the fact that we're excluded from the Building Faster Fund, which provides funding for housing growth, and we're excluded from that simply because we're a region," she says.
Council unanimously passed the motion, joining Grimsby and Pickering.
She added the government said there would be compensation, of which the region has not heard anything yet. "And it seems that all regions were excluded from that, even though we play a significant role in providing some of the necessary infrastructure to support those housing targets."
