Senior Charged with Assault at Park

Police say he was watching, talking to children, they believe he was also at other parks and schools

Police are asking parents who might have been at some St. Catharines parks to call them, due to a suspicious man.

Police recently got a call from a concerned parent, who was at a park in the Russell Avenue and Catharine Street area on Wednesday, at around 9am, when an older man was seen watching, following and talking to children.

At one point, the man attempted to grab the caller's young child, the caller intervened, and the man grabbed the caller.

Police add the man later returned, spoke to other kids, at which point police were called, arresting 78-year old Carmelito Mariano of St. Catharines for assault.

He has a bail hearing today.

Police say he is Filipino, wiith a dark, tanned complexion, wearing a long sleeve dark navy shirt, shorts, and baseball hat, and may have spoken with kids at other parks and schools.
