Sir Adam Beck Plant Receives Major Investment

Partnership will ensure generators are refurbished over 15 years, increasing electricity output

Provincial government is teaming up with Ontario Power Generation and GE Verona to refurbish, rebuild, 25 generators at the Sir Adam Beck power generating station in Niagara Falls.

Minister of Energy Todd Smith made the announcement this morning at the plant, saying over $1-billion will be spent, working on one unit at a time, over 15 years.

"Once completely refurbished, the station will produce 1,700 megawatts of safe, reliable and clean electricity... that's enough to power 1.7-million homes.  That's a number that actually represents a 50 megawatt increase."

He says the work will create 200 jobs, and ensure the plant keeps working for another 30 years.

Nicolle Butcher is the Chief Operations Officer with OPG, and spoke highly of the Niagara Falls plant.  "This fleet continues to set new heights and performance.  Just last year we recorded the highest energy output from our Niagara stations in over 40 years.  This historic milestone reflects the dedication of our station employees."

The Energy Minister added they are working on other projects around the province to keep increasing supply to face the ever rising demand due to population growth.
