Fort Erie CAO says town too close to lake, weather is unpredictable with lake effect snow
As with other municipalities, Fort Erie is adjusting snow removal plans with this warm winter.
Last week we told you Niagara Falls has saved roughly $30,000 so far this year, putting that money elsewhere.
Fort Erie Chief Administrative Officer Chris McQueen says they have not been able to put a dollar figure to snow plow savings, since they're so close to the lake, and predicting is too volatile. "Not able to predict or forecast either the extent or volume of snow removal we'll get, and in a lot of low lying areas, we often get with these rising lake levels and other things that sometimes can occur during winter storms."
He adds they try to plan similar to other Niagara cities, but reserves set aside would be higher relative to maintenance costs.
But, he says the trucks do not sit idle.
"Shoulder repairs, with putting out stone, or doing cold patch, and getting an early start on some of the pothole repairs, that start to emerge at this time of the year... with that freezing and thawing cycle."
