Council unanimously passed resolution asking region and province for more help
Unanimous support at Thorold city council for a motion condemning discrimination of the homeless and those suffering from addiction.
Councillor Carmen DeRose's motion also wants the region to create an Indigenous homeless and housing action plan, among other ideas.
He's also a teacher, and learned a former student of his died. "A couple of days before Christmas, unfortunately, a young lady, 32-years old, left 3 young children.... it was a fentanyl issue. It's close to my heart, not the first student I've lost, it breaks my heart."
Councillor Nella Dekker encouraged everyone to learn more about addictions.
The motion also wants the region to host a public summit, and for the province to use other resources instead of property taxes.
Councillor Jim Handley added drug addiction was made worse during the pandemic. "10-fold, with the handing out of free cash, to individuals who otherwise wouldn't have had the accessibility they did have to it. I believe we need to be part of the solution, because the government was part of the problem."
Councillor Henry D'Angela added the province needs to help more, funding has always been a problem.
