A Coalition for a Better St. Catharines is fed up with waiting, saying owners have had 10-plus years to do it
Frustration is mounting for people fed up with years of delays in getting the old GM site in St. Catharines cleaned up.
It's to the point that Director of A Coalition for a Better St. Catharines Gwen Kennedy says they've commissioned a Niagara transit bus covered with "Clean up the fomer GM site: no more delays". "So, what's really causing us worry is that they've just notified us that there is asbestos in the ground soil, so that's terrifying."
She says over 3,200 people have eagerly signed a petition, also fed up with delays. "So far we have to get them to agree to even start, and they haven't done that. They're crying for more time, they want to do an environmental study, there's all kinds of things, yet, they've had 10-plus years."
She adds Mayor Mat Siscoe spoke of full remediation, which costs millions of dollars. "But what we're talking about is a ground surface clean up. So, get rid of those pits, those holes that go into nowhere, the shards of glass, the contaminated soil, get rid of all those things first, and just make it safe."
She says people, including children go into the buildings. "Urban Explorers did a video on it, and it showed them right inside the site, walking around, throwing rocks around, and doing all kinds of things."
The bus will be driven for 5-weeks with the logo, the group adding it's tired of government and industry pointing fingers at each other.
