Councillor Jamie Lee wants to include more services at hospital
An opportunity for the City of Welland to declare a homelessness and substance abuse emergency has been deferred by council for more information.
Councillor Jamie Lee's motion was to include expanded services at Welland hospital.
Councillor David McLeod likes the concept, but is not convinced declaring an emergency will help. "Niagara Health comes and talks to us about today's challenges, how they're addressing them today, where the gaps are, whether or not declaring an emergency is helpful. As well as what are they focusing on the Welland hospital conceptually, so that we have a full understanding of where we are today, and where we'll be tomorrow."
CAO Jessica Ruddell... "I did have a meeting with the Niagara Health system, and I know they are working on some of these pieces, so, we can absolutely provide that update. I believe they are preparing something for council to receive."
She added the city declared a crisis for homelessness a few years ago, which is different from an emergency.
