St. Catharines MPP asking the government to use the Environmental Protection Act

A call for action from St. Catharines NDP MPP for the government to move on cleaning up the old GM plant on Ontario Street.

Jennie Stevens spoke in Toronto today, saying people have waited long enough to get rid of contamination, asbestos and other problems.

She adds residents are fed up with finger pointing.  "This is why this morning I tabled a motion asking the government to use Section 17 and 18 of the Environmental Protection Act, to hold General Motors accountable for the remediation costs."

The city just told the owners to fix the buildings or tear them down after community complaints.

John Pula was the union health rep who retired in 2009, he says the city received a warning from Sarnia in 2020.  "It's just a warning to let you know that you need to clean up the asbestos problem as soon as possible.  I'm telling you this because we had an asbestos plant years ago, and we're still dealing with hundreds of people with lung cancer."
