Canada is implementing 25 percent tariffs on close to $30 billion worth of American goods.
OTTAWA/WASHINGTON - Canada has hit the United States with a second round of retaliatory tariffs.
The 25 percent tariffs will affect close to $30 billion worth of American goods. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc says this includes steel and aluminum products, computers, cast-iron goods, and sport equipment.
The US implemented a 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada yesterday, but it could have been a lot higher. US President Donald Trump had threatened to raise it to 50 percent earlier this week, after Ontario Premier Doug Ford implemented an electricity surcharge on three US states. Ford suspended the surcharge after speaking with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick over the phone and Trump scaled the tariffs back to 25 percent in response.
Ford, LeBlanc and Ambassador to the US Kirsten Hillman will meet with Lutnick in Washington today. Ford has told reporters that he's hoping to sort out a coherent plan for the road ahead.
