Crown decides not to pursue animal cruelty charges against Marineland
Charges against Marineland have been stayed.
Last December, charges were laid after the group Animal Justice filed a complaint with Niagara Regional Police.
The park was accused of violating the Criminal Code by using dolphins and whales for entertainment purposes.
To date, Marineland has denied the accusations, saying their shows are of an "educational nature."
Animal Justice says the decision sends the message that animals don't matter in the legal system.
"What’s the point of passing new laws to protect animals if prosecutors refuse to accept that animal cruelty is a serious matter of public interest, & won’t bring Marineland to trial?"
Charges are stayed when a judge or the Crown decides that it's not in the public's best interest for the case to continue.
We've reached out to Marineland for comment.
