Police say a Welland man broke in overnight, leaving the child with serious injuries, video surveillance from neighbours helped in this case
The abhorrent sexual assault of a child under the age of 5 is under investigation by the NRP.
Officers were called at around 9, Sunday morning, to a home in the Crowland Avenue and York Street area of Welland, concerning a medical call involving a child.
They found the front door had been forced open, and the child suffering from serious injuries, prompting an immediate criminal investigation.
The child is in stable condition at hospital.
Police learned sometime overnight, an unknown individual broke in, and assaulted the child without the parents hearing anything.
Police spoke to neighbours, and found one had video surveillance.
After looking at it, police tracked down and arrested 25-year old Daniel Senecal of Welland, charging him with:
• Aggravated Sexual Assault on a Person Under 16 Years
• Assault
• Assault / Choking
• Break Enter and Commit - Dwelling House
• Sexual Interference With a Person Under 16 Years of Age
The accused had a bail hearing Monday.
