Haley Bateman concerned taxes will go 'wild'
A Niagara Regional councillor is encouraging the city she represents to keep pressing other levels of government for funding help.
Haley Bateman spoke to St. Catharines council this week, stressing the need to address chronic underfunding of services and infrastructure.
She explained how tourism makes Niagara unique. "With a population of approximately 500,000, yet we service 14,000,000... that is wild, and I don't think we've addressed that enough. I certainly wonder as a regional councillor did I drive that point home hard enough."
She stressed the importance of meetings like the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference. "We really need to take those moments and pull them aside and say how heavily underfunded we are. To play catch up, our taxes are going to be wild."
She says the "New Deal for Niagara" passed at the region addresses these issues.
