The province announced who is receiving the design contract for the twinning of the skyway
Another piece of the puzzle revealed this morning concerning construction of a second bridge, twinning the Garden city skyway.
Provincial Minister of Transport Prabmeet Sarkaria was joined by provincial and local colleagues near the bridge, announcing the detailed design contract for the second bridge has been granted to Skyway Bridging Partners.
He then outlined what happens next. "Following this project, the existing bridge will be rehabilitated carrying Niagara bound traffic. The new 4-lane 2.2km twin bridge will then open to carry Toronto bound traffic over the Welland canal."
The existing bridge, built in 1963, needs work, but the twin bridge will be built first.
St. Catharines mayor Mat Siscoe was there. "I couldn't be happier to get to this stage in this project. This next phase, which includes the design of the twin bridge, updates to surrounding roads and ramps, and the utility re-location sets the stage for a project that will deliver real lasting benefits to our city and province."
The transport minister added the QEW will be expanded between the Burlington skyway and Niagara to ease congestion.
