Thorold council voted to suspend 90-days pay for Jim Handley, over a Facebook post that some found disturbing, offensive
A Thorold city councillor has been slapped with a 90-day pay suspension by his council colleagues, in relation to a social media post.
Council agreed a facebook post by Jim Handley about COVID-19 vaccines, along with Jewish names, led to antisemitic commentary.
The councillor stood up for himself. "I reached out to the Jewish community, and they had no concerns or comments. I reached out to Facebook and they didn't post that this was racist or against community standards, I did that. And the complainant in fact said, 'Go to Facebook, you can do it'."
Councillor Carmen DeRose did not see the problem, and asked for a 30-day suspension, that was defeated.
City clerk Nicholas Debono said this is not the councillor's first offense. "I do not believe there is any justification for his conduct, and I find it to be flagrant and morally wrong. The councillor has shown no remorse and indeed seems to think he was totally justified in sharing the post."
The majority of councillors found the post disturbing, offensive and that it doesn't reflect who they are.
