Haley Bateman says the health department is needed at GM plant
A frustrated Niagara Regional councillor is asking the region's health department to get involved in cleaning up the old GM site in St. Catharines.
Haley Bateman wants the City of St. Catharines to have more help, after it just asked the owner to fix or tear down old buildings.
She's also surprised the provincial government is claiming progress in clean up. "We represent the citizens of St. Catharines, it's our job to question government, and to say 'What are we doing? Show us some evidence there has been some progress.' And, as far as I can tell, there hasn't been, in fact, it's only become worse."
She wants the region's health department to provide updates on progress to the city.
"I think a monthly report, I think a 24 hour crisis line, for people that live in the area. You know, we have really, really high gusts of wind constantly now, and that's picking up all that soil and debris, that we know has asbestos in it."
She is asking the regional clerk that this motion be included in this month's council meeting.
