St. Catharines Collegiate Secondary School to name new synthetic track and turf field after Olympian Mohammed Ahmed.
An Olympic silver medalist is getting a unique local tribute.
St. Catharines Collegiate Secondary School will soon be home to a new synthetic track and turf field, which will be named after former student and Olympian Mohammed Ahmed.
"This is definitely a great honour, because even though I don’t live in St. Catharines anymore, this is home. It’s where my history in running started and it’s always going to be an important part of me," said Ahmed, who placed second in the 5000-metre race at the Tokyo Olympics. "The best thing about coming back home is how lovely the people are. It’s a really tight-knit community, and I hope creating infrastructure like this will tie those bonds even tighter."
The new facility, which will be available for all elementary and secondary DSBN students to use, will have four running lanes, and other features such as new football goal posts.
The City of St. Catharines has partnered up with the DSBN to make the new facility official.
It's not known yet when the school's track and field will be completed.
Meanwhile, the DSBN is also discussing the possibility of a synthetic track and turf field at Thorold Secondary School.
