Some travelers can now ask for mail-in applications to be transferred to local Service Canada locations.
The federal government is making some changes to reduce line-ups outside of passport offices.
Canadians who applied by mail over 20 business days ago, can now head to one of more than 300 Service Canada centres to make a transfer request if they're traveling within the next 20 business day.
The announcement was made by Social Development Minister Karina Gould.
She says the change will speed up processing times for overdue passports while helping reduce line-ups for urgent requests.
Previously, transfer requests could only be done at one of 35 specialized passport sites.
