NIAGARA FALLS - It's official, there are captive whales or dolphins left in Canada.
Marineland transferred its remaining six belugas yesterday, sending four to SeaWorld San Antonio and two to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Crews utilized nets, slings and cranes to lift each whale into transport tanks and move them south of the border.
Tofino, a massive beluga weighing 1,500 kilograms, was the final whale to be transferred. This makes him the final captive whale in the history of Canada. He is one of the four whales heading to Texas.
Marineland transferred a total of 30 belugas and four dolphins to five different aquariums in recent weeks, making this the largest collective move of whales and dolphins the world has ever seen.
According to the Canadian Press, there is a deal in place to sell the Marineland property in Niagara Falls, but it's conditional upon the removal of its animals.
There is a federal law that bans whale and dolphin captivity, breeding and performances.
