It was officially opened yesterday in St. Catharines with ribbon cutting ceremony

A new fire training centre is officially opened for St. Catharines fire department.

The province and city teamed up on the $2.3-million price tag for the tower on Renown Road, the ribbon cutting ceremony was yesterday.

Fire Chief Dave Upper tells us the old was taken out of service back in 2015, and torn down.  "We've been doing a lot of training, for example, we've been doing some of the high rise operations at a parking garage.  Now, all those operations that we're training will happen at this facility, so we're very excited to be able to have a one stop shop."

He adds the 3-storey building, made of steel, has 3 burn rooms in which smoke is used for training.

"There's a bunch of other features in the building in regards to synthetic smoke, so we can fill the building with smoke in certain floors, or in it's entirety, and use that for search and rescues, and other types of evolution.  It also has tankers that we use for technical rope rescues."

He says they've been training in parking lots the last few years.
