State funeral for Brian Mulroney is March 23rd
The former Conservative Member of Parliament for Niagara Falls remembers fondly what Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was like.
Mulroney passed away last week at age 84, the state funeral is Saturday, March 23rd in Montreal.
Rob Nicholson remembers when his daughter Christine was born in 1990. "We received this beautiful basket full of flowers, and it was from him. He made a fuss about the fact that I was now the parent to a little girl. He was good to all his members of parliament."
He adds Mulroney was good at explaining to his colleagues controversial topics, despite the criticism that came over issues such as the Goods and Services Tax, or free trade with the United States.
"Just makes sense that we should do this with the United States. But, there were many people that felt 'no, we should keep American stuff out of the country, and not worry about these things'."
He says Mulroney wanted the GST to replace the manufacturers tax to help Canadian businesses.
One of the biggest things that impressed Nicholson was the Prime Minister's stance on aparthied.
