Alan Unwin was elected in 1994
A former mayor of St. Catharines has passed away.
Current Mayor Mat Siscoe says Alan Unwin won the top job in 1994, victorious over nine other candidates.
The mayor's office says he played a key role in discussing service cost distribution during the Mike Harris government, but he also guided St. Catharines through the aftermath of the death of Kristen French.
He was also principal of Carlton School, and Ferndale school in St. Catharines, as well as leader of the St. Catharines Transit Commission in the mid 80s.
Mayor Siscoe adds Unwin's ability to navigate the complexities of governance with finesse uplifted the lives of many for years to come.
