City of Thorold asking Niagara region to include them in finding solutions
Another effort by the City of Thorold to reach the homeless using an advisory committee with people who've lived homeless.
Councillor Carmen DeRose's idea passed easily last night, which asks for greater collaboration between the region and the 12 municipalities.
Local advocate Steven Soos told council this problem is everywhere, and people are frustrated. "I don't want this committee to be tokenism, I want this committee to mean something. When the municipality appoints a representative, I want that person to have been through addiction, have been through homelessness, have been through mental health challenges."
He wants the committee to review policies before they fail.
Advocate Cheryl Rowe added people lived experience beats anyone who only has academic background. "Policies that look good on paper can have negative side effects. People with lived experiences can anticipate how policies will actually play out in their lives, and can help prevent these failures."
They stressed they don't want threatrical policy, but practical solutions.
