The NDP MPP for Niagara Falls says is calling on the Ford Government to support local wineries.
Wayne Gates has introduced a new bill called the Supporting Economic Recovery and Renewal in the Niagara Region Act.
If passed it would create a basic tax exemption for VQA and Ontario wine sold at wineries.
Gates says it would provide relief for wineries during the pandemic.
"Frankly, we need to do a better job of support our wine industry and ensure they have a larger share of industry like we see in other provinces. These businesses create jobs right here in our community and the impact of COVID-19 could see up to one in five wineries closing their doors."
