Canadian music legend Gordon Lightfoot died of natural causes in Toronto last night. He was 84-years-old.
TORONTO - The music world is mourning the loss of a legendary Canadian singer-songwriter.
A family representative for Gordan Lightfoot says he died of natural causes at Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital yesterday evening.
His debut folk album Lightfoot was released in 1965. He eventually transitioned to pop music, making his debut on the Billboard chart with his hit song If You Could Read My Mind in 1971. Lightfoot is also known for the Canadian ballads Early Morning Rain and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Tributes have been pouring in since his death was announced last night. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released the following statement on his Twitter page:
"We have lost one of our greatest singer-songwriters. Gordon Lightfoot captured our country’s spirit in his music – and in doing so, he helped shape Canada’s soundscape. May his music continue to inspire future generations, and may his legacy live on forever. To his family, friends, and many fans across the country and around the world: I’m keeping you in my thoughts at this difficult time."
