Criticism from a Niagara Regional councillor that proposed changes to government structure would leave decision making power in the hands of a few.
Haley Bateman releasing a statement saying giving mayors and a regional chair disproportionate authority risks marginalizing women, and minority communities who rely on multiple pathways to participate in government.
She points out women make up, at most, 35% of elected officials, and concentrating power into a few hands risks losing perspectives.
She also points out more seats means more chances of diverse candidates succeed, and the idea that any council member would get more than one vote is absurd.
The latest model from Chair Bob Gale, that appears to be gaining ground, is a Regional Chair and 12 mayors as councillors.
