The Niagara Region reports that green bin usage is up six months after a new collection contract was launched.
Last October, the region moved to every-other week garbage collection for residents and businesses.
Since then, green bin tonnage is 34 percent higher, whereas garbage tonnage has decreased about 16 percent.
Recycling tonnages are also up by nearly 12 percent.
The changes were made in order to reduce the amount of garbage in landfills.
